Common questions

Honest answers about retirement homes

What is a retirement home in Ontario?
A retirement home is a privately-paid residence licensed by Ontario's Retirement Homes Regulatory Authority (RHRA). Residents typically rent a suite and pay separately for selected care services like medication administration, bathing assistance, or dementia care.
How is a retirement home different from long-term care?
Retirement homes are private and chosen directly by the resident or family. Long-term care (LTC) homes are publicly funded by Ontario's Ministry of Health and access is assessed by Home and Community Care Support Services. LTC has waitlists; retirement homes can usually accept new residents in 2–6 weeks.
How much does a retirement home cost in Toronto?
Most Toronto homes do not publish prices. As of 2026, expect roughly CAD $3,000 to $8,000+ per month, depending on suite type and care level. Pricing is set by each home - call directly for a written quote.
Are all the homes on this site licensed?
Yes. Every one of the 776 homes listed here holds an active RHRA licence. The licence number is shown on each home's detail page.
Do you take referral fees from retirement homes?
We never charge families. We can also schedule a free visit for you. Homes contribute to maintenance only after a successful move-in.
